basically, you're tired of being the third wheel on a tricycle when the other two wheels want so bad to be a bicycle. and then it's like not only are they a bicycle, they're a fucking fixie. and everyone fucking loves fixies. nobody likes a unicycle.
star wars is the audrey hepburn of sci-fi films. it's popular and likeable and has a huge following. blade runner is katharine hepburn. more serious in her craft. more commanding in her performance but just as likeable, just not as popular.
if there is one thing tumblr has taught me, it’s that girls love audrey hepburn. i follow about a hundred or so tumblrs. three quarters of them are girls. of those girls, i guarantee you will see a picture of audrey hepburn tucked somewhere in their archive.
which is fine. it’s awesome. she’s great. audrey’s contribution to style and the feminine identity is major. audrey hepburn is an icon for ‘girls who, at some point early in their lives feel drab or inadequate in hopes of one day becoming a princess.’ this narrative is retold countlessly throughout her filmography. she’s the ultimate ugly duckling turned beautiful swan. what girl wouldn’t be down with that sort of stuff?
every girl goes through an audrey phase.
but dudes, be wary of that shit. not in like a “avoid dat bitch, she crazy” sort-of-way, but in a “gherl you can find that shit at ross for cheaper” kind-of-way. what you want is for them to go through their audrey phase and discover how awesome katharine hepburn is. katharine hepburn and audrey are only distantly related but the connections are there.
katharine hepburn is just as likeable as audrey. just as elegant as audrey. where katharine trumps audrey is a more complete sense of depth. katharine is intelligent and knows what she wants. katharine played roles of go-getter types of women. she is a fuller embodiment of feminist ideals and any girl who is into that shit knows whats up.
katharine hepburn is regarded as the best actress of all time. that has to count for something.
basically, i’m saying this: no qualms against a girl who’s into audrey. but usually it’s only the surface qualities they’re into. they like the fact she is a fashion icon. that she has an organic sense of grace. that she gets treated like a princess. BUT a girl who is into katharine’s body of work is someone to be taken seriously. who exudes confidence. and is willing to do what she has to, to do what is just. if audrey is the embodiment of style, katharine is the embodiment of substance.
that’s cool too, yeah?
idk, you guyz. i dont claim to know much about girlz. letz be real: i just compared two feminine icons to sci-fi films. that’s about as anti-poon as it gets.
